#53: youtube for beginners: expectation vs. reality

So you want to broadcast yourself on YouTube? In 2015, I started a YouTube account for my food blog (which I had since 2013, unofficially since 2009). Here's my own expectation versus reality take on this video-sharing platform.

Expectation: I'm gonna upload a video and it will go viral
Reality: Errr... 20 views ONLY?

Expectation: I need a DSLR, a microphone like a boom mic. Oh, add a tripod, lighting and extra lens to the list.
Reality: While it's true that those equipment can help create better visuals, starting with an Iphone is good enough - especially when you're still new. My Penang videos were all shot via iPhone 6s.

Expectation: Any title will do
Reality: CLICKBAIT!!! Although I hate this, but it's true - people would wanna watch videos with super catch title

Expectation: Any video thumbnails will do
Reality: Again, people want something more dramatic.... then they'll click and watch

Expectation: I'm gonna get 1,000 subscribers just like that *snap fingers
Reality: No. When you're new, no one is going to care about you *facepalm

Expecation: I wanna be famous, fast.
Reality: No, you have to earn that right, by uploading awesome content.

#52: finally 100

Finally, the Subscribers count on my YouTube channel hit 100. In the YouTube world, this is nothing. In my own little world, this is major. A year ago, I was telling Mariah, a fellow content creator, that I wanted to concentrate on just producing content. At that time I just had like a handful of simple videos and just less than 10 subscribers. My views count was just like 300. Even at that time, I was just so happy to have 300 or more views. That's how lame I am.

26 videos, more than 20000 views and 100 Subscribers later.... here we are! As much as it was a goal to reach 10000 subs, I know that producing content should be my aim at this infancy stage.

The more content I share, the more I will know what works (my ETS train review video has more than 10,000 views) and what does not work (I'm surprised the Nasi Lemak Cheesecake didn't hit a lot of views).

I need to enjoy this journey. And let's talk about this again when I reach 1,000 subs. If it will ever happen.

#51: macam syok sendiri je

Immediately after I posted my latest VLOG - I asked myself: "Am I too full of myself? Is it like a syok sendiri thing?"

And the most important question: What will people think?

As an introvert, I just cringe after looking at myself on the video. There's this fine line - a part of me wants to put myself out there in the realm of YouTube, and there's a part of me that seek a private refuge - away from the world.

But YouTube is the IN thing. I salute all these vloggers that showcase themselves. And I know YouTube has open bigger doors for them.

After reflecting on all this... I want my videos which I will produce in the future to answer this ultimate question: What will my viewers learn from my videos?

Will it make them go to a certain restaurant and try their food? Will it make them wake up early in the morning and be part of KL Car Free Morning?

Now...I'm no influencer... but if my videos are informative, as much as they are entertaining... I know I'm on the right track.

I'm still new guyssss... and still experimenting.

#50: new vlog

OMG. I've reached post #50 - which I was supposed to do by end of 2016. It's almost the end of February now. Oh well. I NEED TO PUSH MYSELF HARDER TO BLOG...

...and also VLOG.

I really want to be open about my journey on YouTube because at least I can document what I've learned, how I feel about YouTube (I WANT MY 10,000 SUBS) and if I will continue doing it until the year end (well, my aim is to do 40 videos for Best Food KL by the end of 2017).

I went to the KL Car Free Morning again like I said I would 2 weeks ago when I first attended it. This time I purchased a new strap for my GoPro so that I was able to capture some visuals. The original wrist/arm mount cost below RM300, but I went to Lazada and purchased it for like RM40 or something. *I just knew that I would be using it like once or twice... might as well save up and use a cheaper product*

Thank god I did that... cuz you know what... the visuals were just shaky as I made my way through the city centre on a bicycle.

I wanted to edit the visuals later, but decided to just spend the rest of the morning editing a simple video. So here goes...

#49: 100 subscribers

Haha... this is kinda pathetic... but I'll be celebrating 100 subscribers SOON. So far I have 90 subscribers, so I need 10 more. So if you are reading this right now and you have a YouTube/Google account, please SUBSCRIBE HERE. hehehe...

For the fun of it, I made this announcement on Twitter.

I know like all these famous YouTubers celebrate like 10,000 subscribers, 100,000 subscribers or even 1 here I am - the pathetic me - celebrating my first 100 subscribers with a CONTEST! hashtag gigih! #gigihsangat

But hey, each milestones is worth celebrating right. Who knows I'll reach more subscribers in the future and I'll look back at this post and be like, "So this is how it all started!"

So now get me 100 subs and I'll do a contest!!!!!!!

#48: #dailyMOJO 365

4 years ago, I never got to finish a project called "dailyMOJO 365". Similar to this countdown of 100 posts, I never got to 80 posts back in 2013. I've said many times about writing more... AND I SHOULD BE WRITING MORE!!!!

Felt like a failure not to be able to finish that project... but 4 years on let's do this. Let's change to countdown to 100 posts... let's just finish one cycle of 365!

Join me in this journey.

#47: i hate durian

I am not a big fan of durian at all... so just imagine what I had to go thru to try the Durian Cheese Tart from Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart - which is like the 'in' thing right now... is it not 'in' anymore.

Anyway, the latest VLOG is on me trying the durian cheese tart. It's a FUN video... so please don't kecam me all you durian lovers out there.

Enjoy this video and don't forget to subscribe to Best Food KL!

#46: klcc park

Did 1 round on Saturday and 4 rounds just now. I think i should be doing this every weekend, even though next week is KL Car Free Morning which is another event i am looking forward to.

#45: not going to renew

Name change to the blog.

I've decided not to renew my domain, Might as well just use a new domain now, and rename this blog syaf 100 - in conjunction with my aim to produce the first 100 posts!

I only posted 8 posts in January 2017. So disappointed myself. If I can't even make it a point to update this blog regularly - how else can I succeed in my other social media projects? *sigh*

How are you guys doing? *pretending that I have readers reading this. haha*

#44: KL car free morning

Mak wanted to bet if I could wake up early today (Sunday) to attend the KL Car Free Morning.

I've been wanting to take part but last year I used to work on Sundays if I'm on shift. Even if I get Sundays off, I would typically sleep in.

Now that I have my weekends back, I thought of making the effort to attend the KL Car Free Morning. I missed a few events as I didn't check the calendar properly. So when I saw that it's happening this morning (Feb 5), I told Mak I wanted to go.

"Let's bet if you're gonna wake up early!"

At around 6am this morning, she saw me still asleep and she purposely didn't wanna wake me up, so she could win the bet. Little did she know, after pressing the snooze button (twice!!) I was finally wide awake.

I took the LRT to Masjid Jamek and walked to Dataran Merdeka. I wanted to cycle but since I arrived at around 7.45am I was ready for the possibility that there were no more bikes to rent.

To my surprise, there were several bicycles and thank God the guy who attended to me was so nice, he made sure that the seat was at the right height for me.

Once I got hold of it, I immediately aimed to go to KLCC so I cycled from Jalan Raja Laut and head to Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, made a turn at Jalan Dang Wangi before entering Jalan Ampang. Made an exit to Jalan Tun Ismail before turning right to Jalan P.Ramlee.... and there it was KLCC!!

It felt to surreal to be cycling around KL major's roads. I wanted to take a lot of videos and even vlog... but I decided to just leave the cameras in the bag and just enjoy the morning breeze. It was all about enjoying the moment... the present moment.

I also felt productive to be waking up as early as 6.45 (my aim was 6.15.... hahaha!).

I am definitely going to be part of the the next event.

I even joked to Mak: "Mak, nak beli basikal sendiri lah...tak payah sewa!"

Her reply, "Sekali dua... lepas tu kau campak basikal tu."

Ok, she knows me well enough.
